- Put a Stop to Attacks on ATMs
The article ATM explosive attacks in Europe rise again on association-secure-transactions.eu stated, “EAST has just published a European Payment Terminal Crime Report covering 2022 which highlights an increase in explosive attacks on European ATMs. ATM explosive attacks (including explosive gas and solid explosive attacks) were up 16% (from 629 to 727 incidents) and attacks due to ram raids and ATM burglary were up 8% (from 447 to 484 incidents).” They also noted, “EAST Executive Director Lachlan Gunn said, ‘This rise in ATM explosive attacks is of great concern to the industry, in particular solid explosive attacks that account for over 60% of the blasts. While extensive measures have already been taken to mitigate the risk of such attacks, each attack creates significant collateral damage to equipment and buildings and can pose a threat to life.’” It's no secret that attacks on ATMs have always been a challenge for financial institutions, and these challenges seem to be rising. There are a few ways that financial institutions can reduce the risk of attacks on their ATMs: 1. Install ATMs through a wall Installing ATMs through a wall inside a fortified ATM lobby reduces the risk and mitigates attack repercussions. 2. Add strong camera surveillance using the Parabit Discreet Camera Enclosures The article, How to Stop ATM attacks on atmmarketplace.com quotes Kristen Williams, assistant VP of administrative services, financial operations department for One Nevada Credit Union, “’Aside from the extensive camera coverage and alarm systems with a duress code built into the alarm key pad, our servicing team is a third-party cash handler that is armed when at the machine for cash swaps and deposit pulls.’” Let’s back up to where Kristen mentions extensive camera coverage. Does your financial institution have camera surveillance covered? If not, check out the Parabit Discreet Camera Enclosures here . Enclosures are available with different mounting options for maximum flexibility to support analytics, biometrics, access control, and more. Place cameras in ideal locations for best facial imaging such as door mullion, countertops, walls, frames, and bollards. - Identity Theft and ATM Skimming
Skimming threats include reader tamper, cable cut, physical or RFID skimmers, and reader replacement. Parabit is celebrating 10 years of preventing Debit/Credit Card Skimming at over 15,000 ATM/ITM Lobbies and Remote Banking facilities globally, as well as detecting and prohibiting loitering and improving customer safety within your 24 hour banking facilities . As stated on FBI.gov , “Skimming occurs when devices illegally installed on ATMs, point-of-sale (POS) terminals or fuel pumps capture data or record cardholders’ PINs. Criminals use the data to create fake debit or credit cards and then steal from victims’ accounts. It is estimated that skimming costs financial institutions and consumers more than $1 billion each year.” As noted in kioskmarketplace.com, Businesses that deploy ATMs should streamline all the data they collect into one comprehensive, centralized system that provides the most up-to-date inventory of fleet devices, hardware and software components. Proactive protection will not only aid in detecting threats in real-time to stop bad actors from manipulating data, but also ensure that businesses are prepared to discover new threats sooner and implement protections quicker. - ATMs Still a Major Player in Consumer Banking
Learning to adapt to the changes has been the saving grace for banks using ATMs. As technology surges into 2023, people whom frequent ATMs are beginning to see a drastic change in the machine’s technology. This comes from the pressure of constantly evolving technology and innovation. ATMs were put into the market in the 1960s, and by the 1980s, it was stated to be a new level of technology. However, as the world changes with the growth of credit cards and mobile forms of payment, ATMs are becoming increasingly less used. In fact, as stated in The Boss Magazine’s article The Second Life of ATMs , “More than 40% of Americans rarely even make purchases with cash, and people who deposit checks do so remotely on their smartphones.” Without the need to dispense cash or deposit checks, how will ATMs survive? Learning to adapt to the changes has been the saving grace for banks using ATMs. Obtaining higher retention rates with their customers has become easier to manage with their new personalization features for ATMs. New technology has allowed banks to know what a customer frequently purchases, tracking their frequent spending habits, which will allow banks to offer coupons based on said purchases. According to the article, ATMs and Branches Still an Important Part of Today’s Consumer Banking Experience from wave2locator.com, “The added payment choices being pushed into the marketplace are creating more payment choices without eliminating their predecessors.” Banks have also invested in VTMs or ITMs, which are video or interactive teller machines. These have all the regular features of an ordinary ATM, except they use a video link that takes you to a human teller who can then walk you through difficult transactional processes. ATMs have also been implemented with security features including facial recognition and other biometric features that will overall reduce fraud. If you’d like to know more about biometric and facial recognition technology, make sure to visit Parabit’s Access Control Mounts & Posts page to learn more about the custom-designed mounts available for Biometric and Access Control readers. With the adjustment of technology also comes the adjustment of the physical aspect of ATMs. Some banks have taken the initiative to switch to tablet-style ATMs in branch lobbies, with quick cash deposits and functions. The main purpose? The project is a “reinvention of the ATM to integrate ATMs into the mobile-digital world and to set up a new wave of innovation and investment in our industry through this dynamic ecosystem,” ATMIA CEO Mike Lee said to The Financial Brand, stated in The Boss Magazine’s article The Second Life of ATMs . The article , Are ATMs a Dying Technology? from atmmachines.com mentions, “Digital forms of payment continue to grow, but the use of cash remains relatively stable, with close to 20% of all payments in the U.S. still made with physical fiat currency. The ATM is more than a single piece of hardware — it is an endpoint device that delivers a series of benefits to a consumer, such as convenience, brand awareness, access to service, and contactless function.” Although technology has risen to a new level in the past decade, banks continue to keep ATMs a major player in the game. - Airtrain to LaGuardia Airport Plans Have Stopped for Good
LaGuardia continues to build and expand, helping to enhance the passenger experience as they modernize one of the key points of entry to the great New York area. This week, Kathy Hochul announced that the plan to build an AirTrain to LaGuardia Airport is over. This is announced after the cost of the project rose to $2.4 billion, which is 5 times what the original estimate was. According to 1010 Wins’ Article Plan to build Airtrain to LaGuardia officially over: Hochul , This project started in 2015, when former governor Andrew Cuomo agreed to build the Airtrain. The original cost was estimated at $450 million, but after his resignation, as well as opposition from officials and the community, it was put on hold. After review from newly elected governor Nancy Hochul, along with the panel of transportation experts, they decided on Monday that increasing bus transportation and adding a shuttle was the best option. Some experts suggested expanding the subway from Midtown to LaGuardia, but engineers were unable to find a way to build a subway extension that was possible. Although this is disappointing to some, LaGuardia continues to build and expand, helping to enhance the passenger experience as they modernize one of the key points of entry to the great New York area.
